MADISON – The Public Service Commission today approved keeping the electric rates of Madison Gas & Electric at the same levels in 2014.

The Citizens Utility Board and other consumer groups and businesses, including the Wisconsin Industrial Energy Group and Airgas Merchant Gases, worked with MGE to freeze electric rates for 2014. This is the first time since 1998 that MGE has not requested an increase in electric rates.

MGE’s electric rates have steadily increased on average by more than 6 percent since 1996, more than twice the rate of inflation.

“The good decisions made today by the PSC mean that Madison Gas & Electric ratepayers will not see an increase in electric rates for 2014,” said Charlie Higley, CUB executive director.  “The first rate freeze in a generation will provide some needed relief to MGE customers.”
